Warren Ellis : Captured Ghosts - Screening at the Vault! 1/6/12

Warren Ellis sees the future. He is a comic book writer and cyberpunk philosopher living on the edge of tomorrow. He speaks to a cult audience of artists, journalists, scientists and fans who hail him as INTERNET JESUS.

See the documentary in the Ultralounge on January 6th!

$7 at the door to witness the magic.  OR, you can purchase Patrick Meaney's previous creation "Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods" for $15 and witness the magic for free!

The film features the most extensive interview Ellis has ever given, and spans his life, from his first memory watching the moon landing as a child, to his recent cross-media success with the film adaptation of Red. Along the way, Ellis’s acerbic wit and core belief in humanity comes across like never before.
Complimenting Ellis’s own words are interviews with his artistic collaborators, friends and admirers from across all media, including actress Helen Mirren, Director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), comedian Patton Oswalt, Adult Film Star Stoya, Musician Claudio Sanchez (of Coheed and Cambria), comics writers Matt Fraction and Antony Johnston, and futurist Jamais Cascio. Ellis's comics collaborators like Marvel Comics CCO Joe Quesada, artists Darick Robertson, Ben Templesmith and Phil Jimenez also provide insight into Ellis's mind and creative workings. The film features numerous ambient interludes that spotlight Ellis’s prose and writing from both his online columns and his comics.
The film was shot over the course of 2010 and 2011 in England, San Diego and New York. It was completed in Fall 2011 and will premiere at the Napa Valley Film Festival in November 2011, before a worldwide theatrical and special engagement run. DVD release will follow in February 2011.
The film was directed by Patrick Meaney, shot by Jordan Rennert, and produced by Respect Films and Sequart, as a followup to the critically acclaimed Grant Morrison: Talking With Gods.

Kagan McLeod at the Vault!!

VERY excited to announce that Kagan McLeod, creator of Infinite Kung Fu (one of the absolute sweetest books of this or any year) will be all up in this comic shop! He will be signing things; he will be talking about his art and work; he might, perhaps, kick something if we ask really politely. More details to come, but this is a Must-Attend event.

Stay Tuned For More Details!

Here's a little about these dudes.

In 1997, Joe met Dave at Michigan Tech.  They became friends and shared a passion for film and music.  Joe often discussed his desire to make films.  At the time,  the only way to do this was to go to film school.  So, the dream was (temporarily) unobtainable.
Joe and Dave kept in touch after graduating from Michigan Tech.  In 2000, Joe moved to Ann Arbor, MI.  While hanging out at the Vault of Midnight comic book store in 2002, Joe met Jamie and Chris.  Jamie and Chris also shared a passion for film.  Fortunately, Jamie said "I'm a writer" and Chris said "I'm a photographer".  Joe was developing an interest in writing and film editing.  Jamie, Chris and Joe collectively said "We need to make films together".
Not too long after this, Dave also moved to Ann Arbor.  Joe introduced Dave to Jamie and Chris.  Dave expressed an interest in sound design.  He also started taking acting classes.
Finally, after a lot of discussion, the group of friends decided to form a production company.  They developed a first draft screenplay for a feature length film.  This feature length film, called "The Last Haunted House", was going to be their first project.  Thankfully, before one frame of footage was shot, they realized that making a feature film without any practical production experience was a very bad idea indeed.  They quickly rebounded and started developing short films.
Production on their first film, "Lights Out", started in March 2010.

David Barker - Composer, Sound Design, Actor
Christopher Beal - Director of Photography, Writer
Jamie Cleaveland - Writer, Production Designer, Actor
Harlan Cleaveland - Production Assistant

All You Can Build ActionFigureBar - 4/23/11

Saturday, April 23 from 4pm to 10pm!

Ok, here's the deal. Curtis has been saving action figure pieces and parts for, like, a million years. Arms, legs, heads, guns, whips, chains, minions, belts, hairpieces, eyeballs, skulls...you name it, we probably have it. We have decided to put them to use. On this day, you can pay $5 to hang out in the Ultra Lounge and build your very own incoherent action figure. All the parts, all the glue, all the putty, and all the paint. Everything will be here for you to utilize. You get one body and unlimited 'other stuff'. If you finish up and want to do another one, you can buy another body! Give it your all, build the action figure you always wanted but could never buy because your needs were too hyper-specific! Now is your chance. Live your dream!

Paradox Explorer in the Ultralounge - 4/16/11

Paradox Explorer is an Ann Arbor based group that uses music, video, photography, electronics, lights and dance to create immersive performances. With a hybrid musical style that incorporates electronica, psychedelic, funk and classical genres, the group paints sonic landscapes which titillate your mind and inspire your body to dance. Paradox Explorer charts new territory on stage with the incorporation of Virtual Reality gloves, sensors and other interactive electronics. The human body is used as a tool to shape the sounds, images and lights emanating from the stage. Far from being a gimmick, the group strives to incorporate these technologies organically into the creative process.

The performance on April 16th is based on the theme of traveling into deep inner and outer space. The event will begin at 9:30 PM with a set by DJ Erika (Ectomorph / erika.net). The main act begins at 11:00PM. For this performance, Paradox Explorer will be joined on stage with dancer Mabel Syrup from Tickled Fancy Burlesque Company.
